The Black Portlanders is an exploratory photo essay and blog imaging people of African descent in Portland, Oregon. Through street photography, impromptu conversations, exploratory art works, and experimental events the Black Portlanders seeks to show the breadth of Black communities in Portland, OR. In early 2013, I began approaching Black people on the streets of Portland, asking them about themselves, their experiences in Portland, and taking their photographs when they agreed. I shared the work online and The Black Portlanders, a community-facing project, was born. In a landscape where the presence and history of Black Portlanders has often been denied, art was one way to connect us. The Black Portlanders work is one aspect of my lifelong commitment to documenting and supporting the presence of people of African descent internationally through embodied multi-disciplinary art practice. It is a journey, more than a project of destination.
