Anciently and traditionally, the dance of belly dancing has been done without shoes of any kind, as the ability to move the bare feet freely was an essential part of creating some of the unique moves within the belly dance itself. It was not until later on that people started to wear either a type of flat sandal, or soft fabric slipper for belly dancing shoes. Some of these shoes have a novelty toe that goes up into a peak, that is pulled back toward the leg with a thread, and secured to the vamp of the top area of the shoe.
